Asbestos management

Asbestos was common in building materials prior to 1995; therefore, buildings built prior to that year were likely constructed with some asbestos-containing materials.

Managing asbestos on campus

Asbestos management at Royal Roads is handled by the environmental safety officer of Operations and Resilience.

The team identifies — and eliminates — hazardous asbestos-containing material before it becomes airborne in our buildings. As long as the material is not friable (that is, it cannot crumble easily), and is not released into the atmosphere, it does not pose a risk.

Testing for asbestos

WorkSafeBC governs the management of asbestos-containing material.

Before disturbing any building components on campus, RRU samples and tests the material for asbestos. If the results are positive, the material is removed by a qualified service provider, following WorkSafeBC guidelines.
