Asbestos awareness at RRU
Asbestos was commonly used in building materials prior to 1995. As a result, buildings constructed prior before that time may contain asbestos-containing materials.
The RRU Langford campus, which officially opened in July 2025, was built in accordance with modern construction standards. There are no asbestos-containing materials in this facility.
We remain committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment across all RRU sites. If you have any questions about asbestos or safety procedures, please contact the Operations and Resilience team.
Asbestos management at the Colwood campus
Asbestos management at RRU Colwood campus is overseen by the Operations and Resilience team. Our top priority is to ensure a safe environment for all workers, students and visitors.
Some older buildings on the Colwood campus may still contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). These materials do not pose a health risk unless they become friable—that is, they can easily crumble and release fibers into the air. To prevent exposure, hazardous ACMs are identified and removed before they can become airborne.
Testing for asbestos
Before any building components are disturbed, RRU conducts asbestos sampling and testing. If asbestos is detected, removal is carried out in compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations.
Regulatory Compliance
RRU follows all WorkSafeBC guidelines for the management, removal, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials to ensure health and safety at every stage of maintenance and construction work.
For questions or concerns about asbestos or building safety, please contact the Operations and Resilience team.
