What is job evaluation?

Job evaluation a systematic process of determining the size and complexity of a role and then ranking the role relative to all roles within the university to establish and maintain internal equity.

A job evaluation is based on information from a variety of sources, including: role profile, organizational structure, and organizational context.

At RRU, we use the Hay Group Guide Chart-Profile Method to evaluate exempt and excluded roles.

The job evaluation process

The job evaluation process can be initiated by a manager or supervisor or an employee, with support from their manager.

About the Hay method

The Hay Method of job evaluation is a gender-neutral evaluation system that assesses jobs on skill, effort, and responsibility. It focuses on the nature and requirements of the job itself, rather than on the skills or qualifications of a particular incumbent.

Skills are categorized as:

  • know-how skills — every ability or skill needed to do the job, including technical or specialized skills, managerial skills and human resources skills
  • problem-solving skills — how someone identifies and resolves problems
  • accountability skills — how much freedom the person in a position has to take action, how the job affects RRU and how it influences the university's success

All positions within an organization are ranked by the same criteria.
